Activities are available for all scout levels and multiple scouting organizations such as Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and American Heritage Girls. These programs can fulfil requirements for many adventures, journeys, badges, etc. Adult must accompany scouts. Leaders and chaperones are free. Minimum fees apply. Stop by the Visitor Center any day of the week between 9am and 5pm to visit with our live animals and explore a wealth of interesting items. Check out interesting displays, partake in activities, or join in on a Community Science Project. Themes vary so stop by often!

Enjoy a relaxing morning fishing at our stocked ponds. Don't worry if you don’t have equipment or experience. Staff will be available to provide assistance and bait. Poles are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Price is per child ages 4 and up and must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration required for all ages.

(Ages 0-6) There’s never been a story time like this! We explore nature stories and wildlife topics each month through interactive hands-on play and crafts. Storytime takes place outdoors in the children’s play area on the 4th Tuesday each month. After story time, we’ll embark on an easy walk in the woods connected to the seasonal stories we share – from frog finding to mushroom hunting, bird calls, and more! In the event of rain, meet in the Education Complex.

Experience wildlife after hours during this magical evening adventure! Join a Virginia Master Naturalist on a hike through moonlit woodlands while using bionic ears to amplify the sounds of night. There is nothing quite like a cold glass of fresh lemonade after a Spring stroll in the woods! We’ll walk an easy 1-2 miles to Goose Creek for wildlife and wildflower viewing, before returning to the Visitor’s Center for a treat. We welcome participants to sit and enjoy their fresh lemonade on the back porch. Appropriate for all ages. Meet at the Visitor Center.

1000 HOURS OUTSIDE GUIDED HIKE SERIES
1000 Hours Outside is a global movement designed for any child (or adult) and any environment. Banshee Reeks will host monthly themed hikes to help you join the 1000 Hours Outside challenge. Let’s go!

Learn to identify and appreciate local tree species from a Virginia Master Naturalist as you explore different habitats. Expect to hike 1-2 miles over varied terrain. Best for ages 8 and up. Meet at the Visitor Center.

(All Ages) Enjoy a leisurely naturalist-led birding stroll through Hanson Park. Learn the basics of birding and the common Spring birds in Hanson Park in this program. Binoculars available. The price is per person and every child must be accompanied by an adult.

Join us for a Family Camp Out at DCC! Bring your tents for a night under the stars in our field. Enjoy late-night playground fun, indoor movies with movie boxes, and a delicious cookout at the pavilion. It's a perfect opportunity for family bonding and unforgettable memories! *per person payment*

(All ages welcome. Ages 5+ must be accompanied by an adult) What are animals doing during dawn and dusk? Who is awake and active? Come join us for an educational program to learn about what a crepuscular animal is and when it is most active! We will learn about the local animals through a hands-on program which we will follow with a short hike/walk to try and see what signs of life we might be able to discover. This program will culminate with a stop by a campfire overlooking the Franklin Park Pond with some smores and hot chocolate!

(All Ages) Come out to experience Franklin Park at dusk for some family and friends’ fun with lawn games and campfires. Roast smores and drink hot chocolate! Listen to music! Look out for fireflies! Explore the Park! Come help us make Franklin Park your next favorite hangout spot!

All ages and experience levels are encouraged to attend. Program fee is per preschool-age participant; parents/guardians are free. Meet in the Education Complex. *No class in July

Join our garden specialist in the Banshee Reeks demonstration garden for a child & parent interactive session where you will learn traditional gardening basics as well as native plant cultivation & care. Help with basic tasks such as seeding and weeding with plenty of time to play as well. Plan to dress to make a mess!

(Ages 6-10) Learn new outdoor skills from a Virginia Master Naturalist while exploring Banshee Reeks. You’ll set up a tent, find your way out of the woods, and identify wildlife tracks. Class will end with a lesson on how to build a campfire and optional s’mores. Youth can be dropped off at the Visitor Center. Advanced registration required.
